FutureDB Workshop

Introduced by Brands and Chaum more than 20 years ago, distance-bounding authentication protocols serve to prevent relay-attacks in authentication scenarios. Relay attacks defeat cryptographic primitives used in secure authentication protocols, since they simply allow attackers to forward messages between an honest prover and an honest verifier. Relaying is all the more dangerous when the prover device automatically runs the authentication protocol, without a user’s consent. Such attacks can have potentially catastrophic consequences in contactless payments, passive keyless entry and start (PKES) systems in cars, and access control scenarios.

For the last two decades, distance-bounding has evolved in three main directions:

  • Practical implementations: attacks and protocols;
  • Protocol design;
  • Provable security and formal analysis..

Our workshop “FutureDB: Distance-bounding: past, present, and future” seeks to unite more tightly these three communities towards the common goal of making distance-bounding protocols usable in practice, and as secure as possible.

Indeed, FutureDB’s explicit aim is to bring together theoreticians and practitioners, experts in attacks, protocol-design, (formal) security analysis, in order to discuss and shape the future research directions of distance bounding, which is the main mechanism to protect against the real-life threat of relay attacks. One of our main hopes is that bringing together all these subcommunities will lead everyone to at least better understand the real-life risks, device limitations, and subtleties of protocol design in this field.
